The spectacular
French Riviera boasts unforgettable views and great atmosphere.
The interior is worth a visit too, featuring mountains, canyons
and medieval villages perched on the hills.
Also consider the
possibility of eating “bouillabaisse” (fish soup) and
“salade de chèvre chaude” (salad with warm goat cheese),
foods that for some strange reason I adore. Wine is good too,
even if pricey (in France drinking is an expensive habit).
Nice could be the starting point of a beautiful travel itinerary. It boasts
a beautiful beach and a lively old town just behind the
promenade. Monte Carlo is quite famous, but not very
economical. It is spectacular driving along the Corniches:
three scenic roads, the Low, the Medium and the High, that run
by the coast at different altitudes and boast sweeping views. I
recommend visiting Eze, a picturesque village perched
over the sea.
Going west,
Antibes and St Tropez are pretty good and famous too.
I prefer the former because the latter is a bit too hyped and
chaotic, but both deserve to be included in your travel itinerary
The Cote d’Azur is a
great place for sailing. Another interesting activity is
trekking: there are nice walks on the Esterel red cape
and on the island of Porquerolles, where there is also
the possibility to rent a mountain bike (too bad there is the
need to ride uphill, which is a kind of torture that should be
banned by the United Nations).
If you proceed
further West, you meet Cassis and the headlands nearby,
which are amazing: the “Calanques” (the local fjords) boast
wonderful views of blue sea, rocky cliffs and all this pretty
stuff.
Inland there are the gorges of
Verdon, perhaps the most beautiful canyon in Europe, an
ideal place for hiking and climbing, or simply for renting a
canoe or a pedal boat and visiting the bottom of the gorge.
So, the Côte d'Azur
is a paradise, especially if you manage to avoid the busiest
places in the high season.
