In the internal rustic of the Basilicata, the Lucane Dolomites stand out both for their rocky peaks and because they represent the main tourist destination outside of Matera. In fact, Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa (and pure mountain toasts) are very picturesque villages, surrounded by super photogenic panoramas, and the activities to do is not lacking.
The main attraction of the area is the angel's flight: hanging from a steel cable, you fly at 100 km/h between Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa, admiring the valley between them and the imposing Lucanian Dolomites. You can start from both countries: in fact, the cable cars are two (Castelmezzano - Pietrapertosa and vice versa) so that you can return "flying" to the starting country; The expensive ticket (70 euros paired, in 2020) includes whether rounded.
In very high season, on Sunday, it is convenient to book. You can take angel's flight tickets to distinguished times, to visit the other country between a flight and another (for example to spend a couple of hours in Pietrapertosa if you start from Castelmezzano), or at consecutive times, leaving you So the time to take a walk or a rail in the rest of the day.
Given the distance traveled on the autoferic adrenaline, obviously there is a certain height difference between the initial and final starting point ... but everything is very well organized and of the pullmans take you back and forth, there is only one stretch On foot to go uphill for 20 minutes (to reach the most at high altitude point in Castelmezzano). It's worth it: the departure on the precipice is really adrenaline!
The Seven Stones Trail that connects Castelmezzano to Pietrapertosa and the two railways that rise to countries from the valley are the other attractions of the area.
The railways are spectacular: top landscapes, vertical stairs, Nepalese and Tibetan bridges. While the long Nepalese bridge over the valley floor is panoramic and easy, the railways are quite toste for those who are not used to - if you have never done it, you absolutely don't go alone.
The marrirous ferrata rises towards Pietrapertosa, while the Salmm apt from the valley in Castelmezzano. The marcirosa is a little easier and the steep trail traces allow you to bypass some exposed stretches of the ferrata - but if you are on a vertical staircase on the rock and you don't know how to get off or go up, you might regret you not have taken a guide , so eye :) a castelmezzano rent renders to 20 euros.
The path of the seven stones, which has 7 stages where statues act poems (spoiler: there are banks), it is interesting first of all as a connection to the foot between Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa. From a country it goes down to the valley and goes back to the other, in about an hour and a half (and then there is the return). Being in the valley, the path of the seven stones is certainly as panoramic as the railways, but it offers beautiful views.
Thanks to the flight of the angel and in the second bar, the Lucane Dolomites have reached a certain fame and have become one of the fundamental destinations for a journey to Basilicata. So many inhabitants of Southern Italy go to Castelmezzano even in the day to fly.
In addition to Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa, there are other countries climbing on the mountains in this part of the Basilicata. Mountain toast is not at all tourism, but, thanks to its castle and the old renovated houses of the historic center, it is a very pleasant stage. You can take some spectacular photos to Mountain Brindisi.
The other advantage of mountain toast or neighboring countries, compared to Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa, is that it is much easier to find economic places to sleep.
To conclude, the trip to the Lucane Dolomites is recommended! A full day can allow you to make the angel's flight and the path of the seven stones, but if you are passionate about railways and you want to enjoy all 3 countries mentioned, spending two days in the Lucane Dolomites is a great idea, not You will get bored.
