Even if it is certainly not among the most touristic regions of Italy, Abruzzo is full of both historical and naturalistic surprises: which is for a weekend trip or for a longer holiday, the traveler will then remain very satisfied .
Let's start from the capital, L'Aquila , which after the earthquake of a few years ago was rebuilt (at least in part) and can still show off its beautiful historic center full of monuments.
In Abruzzo there are several interesting towns that can be the destination of an excursion, like Santo Stefano di Sessanio , a fascinating medieval village, and Sulmona , to see for the ancient Historic walls and palaces.
One of the main reasons for visiting Abruzzo is the presence of the sea and the mountains. The massif of the Gran Sasso stands out, in central Italy, for heights and landscapes. The Gran Sasso Natural Park is one of the most extensive in Italy and is populated by a typical fauna, including numerous chamois.
In Abruzzo there are several spectacular landscapes, and very original, to see. For example, the Stiffe caves are among the most spectacular karst complexes in Italy. I Atri Calanchi , on the other hand, are strange geological formations, to be admired after a visit to the country of Atri . The Lago Capodacqua has old submerged mills, while the valley of the Orfento is ideal for trekking in a beautiful throat, among unexpected landscapes. Also the lake of Scanno deserves a visit, also for the village of the same name.
Among the beautiful Abruzzo landscapes, you can stop to see fortresses, ruins, and monasteries. In particular, the Rocca di Calascio is almost mystical, and offers a splendid view. Very picturesque is also the hermitage of San Bartolomeo in Legio , while the Castello Piccolomini is located next to a real canyon, Le Gorges of Celano .
Abruzzo presents some of the most beautiful traits of the Adriatic coast. The Costa dei Trabocchi , in the province of Chieti , offers a sea to see and enjoy, between beaches and rocks. The trabocchi are fishing piles that stand on the coast, incredibly picturesque: some have become delicious restaurants. The whole coast Abruzzese, however, deserves a visit, also thanks to its long beaches.
In addition to the sightseeing visits listed in the paragraph on "What to see", Abruzzo offers opportunities to do so many different activities during a holiday in the region: whether you go At the sea, in the mountains or at the lake, it will not be bored!
A first option is the trek on the Gran Sasso and in the almost pristine Abruzzo valleys. In winter, the Gran Sasso turns instead in an ideal destination for snow walks, amidst splendid landscapes.
The Adriatic coast, in summer, is very active. You can rent kayaks and windsurfing and in the long beaches, like those of vast, bathing establishments are organized.
Enogastronomy enthusiasts will know what to do in Abruzzo: that you talk about wines, meat, fish or first courses, you will taste succulent specialties. In particular, among the pasta pastrics we list the macaroni to the guitar, strangolatrols and the gnocchi Surecilli. Adriatic's catch is great and is also exploited for the brodetto, a tasty fish soup. Cheese, salami (like the sausage) and sheep roast are other typical delicacies, to be watered with Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.
In addition to this, of course, there is what is described in the paragraph on the subject to Abruzzo: fans D 'Art will not be bored.
when to go and how to move to Abruzzo? The answer to these questions is linked to what you want to do and see. The car is the most comfortable vehicle to move between villages and mountains, while on the coast you can conveniently travel with public transport.

Summer is the best time to admire the mountains of Abruzzo and to appreciate the Adriatic Sea. The trek is fascinating even in half seasons, while winter is obviously the season for skiing and snowshoes in the area of the Gran Sasso which, overcoming the 2000 meters wide and reaching 2912 with a large horn, is often well snowy. For an abogastronomic itinerary in Abruzzo, instead, all seasons can be fine!
