The Molise is probably the least known and less visited region of Italy, and someone is even asked if it really exists, but, in reality, there is so much to see on a weekend or even in a week of vacation. Beyond the tormenters on social media on the existence of this region, in fact, the Molise, close between Abruzzo, Puglia and Campania, offers tourists both the sea of the Adriatic coast , both the mountains of the Apennines , both many beautiful villages.
A trip itinerary here does not take a long time because Molise is the second smallest region of Italy, after the Valle d'Aosta, as well as the youngest , since until 1970 it was formally united with Abruzzo. There are still many places to see.
The capital is campobasso , where you can spend a few hours to see the historic center. Perched on a hill, it offers beautiful views, particularly from the Monforte Castle that dominates the city.
Isernia is a city with a long history and with an interesting historic center. Not far away, panoramically positioned on a hill, there is the village of Venafro , classified in the list of the most beautiful villages in Italy, also thanks to the splendid Castello di Pandone .
Termoli is the main city on the sea of Molise and its citadel surrounded by walls overlooks the Adriatic. The nearby beaches are a great attraction in summer, but Molise is also a mountain region. The Apennines in fact exceed 2000 meters and the green of the pristine molisan forests is contrasted, in winter, from the white of often heavy snowfall.
An original way to explore the Molise is to cover their tratturi, Narrow streets and grass crossing the molise countryside. A travel itinerary on the tratturi allows you to touch characteristic villages and to admire the beautiful landscapes of the hinterland.
In addition to the sightseeing visits listed in the paragraph on "What to see", Molise offers opportunities to do so many different activities during a holiday in the region: whether you go to the Sea or in the mountains, you will not be bored!
Trekking or bicycle along the already mentioned tratturi are two excellent possibilities, as well as all walks along the Apennines. In winter, Molisano tourism centers are Campitello Matese and Capracotta . Here you can ski or walk with snowshoes.
The classic beach activities can be carried out on the sea and eating capitone. For food and wine, the hinterland offers a lot of choice of succulent dishes: from caciocavallo, meat and cold cuts, passing through the truffle, perhaps by drinking on the Biferno, the Vilisano red wine.
When to go and move to Molise? The answer to these questions is linked to what you want to do and see. The car is the most comfortable vehicle to move between villages and mountains, while on the coast you can conveniently travel with public transport.

Summer is the best time to admire the Molise mountains and to appreciate the Adriatic Sea. The trek is also fascinating in half seasons, while winter is obviously the season for skiing and snowshoes on the Apennines. For an enogastronomic itinerary in Molise, instead, all the seasons can be fine!
