Travel itinerary
The Belize is mainly visited by American tourists eager for hot, sea and sun, and how to be wrong? This country has the second longest coral reef in the world after the Australian one: a travel itinerary in Belize is based for a large part on boat trips, snorkeling and diving. The Caribbean Sea allows you to swim with myriads of fish, turtles, breeds and squares.
For a more complete vacation, you can continue your own travel itinerary in Continental Belize, visiting jungle, rivers, waterfalls, Maya temples and caves. And one of the most important Maya centers in the world, Tikal, in Guatemala , is just over the border.
Cayo Caulker and San Pedro
Cayo Caulker is a small caribbean island of colored wooden houses: you can turn themselves entirely on foot in a couple of hours.
Many are the beach bars and several restaurants offer fresh fish and cheap lobster. Cayo Caulker is a simple island, from relaxed rhythms, even if tourism has increased trips and drink prices. The beaches and water are not heavenly as one might expect from a Caribbean island.
You need to take a boat to truly appreciate the sea of Belize, and Cayo Caulker is in fact a fundamental starting point for boat trips on the coral reef: numerous are the tour operators that offer snorkeling trips all similar to seeing fish, suckler sharks, Breeds and corals.
The other tourist island of Belize is Ambergris Caye, where San Pedro is located, larger and active but less picturesque town than Cayo Caulker. From here there are also flights to see Blue Hole from above.
The coral reef and the Blue Hole
The coral reef is the main attraction in a travel itinerary in Belize. The classic snorkeling trip departing from Cayo Caulker or from San Pedro leads to Hol Chan Marine Reserve, where you can swim with nurse sharks and races: it is absolutely worth it. In general, snorkeling on the coral reef deserves, although colors are not lit as in other parts of the world.
Longest and expensive trips lead to snorkeling and above all diving in the Turnoffe and Lighthouse atolls and the Blue Hole.
To better appreciate this blue chasm in the Caribbean Sea you have to be good sub, or admire it from above with a flight whose cost starts from 200 dollars.
We really appreciated a two-day sailing trip (even though we wildered to motor!) Which took us to sleep in a tent in Goff's Caye, a very small strip of sand with a few palms. Beautiful swims, a splendid sunset, a magnificent starry, a very clear sunrise.
For sailors, explore in catamaran atolls and islets is a great way to travel in Belize.
Other destinations
said from the sea, we speak of the mainland. The Cayo District is the place to go to admire nature and archeology. The Mayan temples of Caracol, Xunantunich and Lamanai must be included in your travel itinerary in Belize. And the incredible cave of Actun Tunichil Muknal offers adventure (imagine walking at the buo and Maya skeletons! On the jungle rivers you can make kayaks and other activities.
How, when and more information
avoiding the rainy season from June to October, every other period of the year can be good for a holiday in Belize. You may still take water, and all considered the best months are February and March, hot and dry the right.
For both the interior and the sea part the most comfortable option is to rely on tours. If you are good at bargaining, especially out of season, you could tear discreet prices; Otherwise, the tours cost enough.
