Golfo Baratti by canoe

Beaches and cliffs north of Piombino: another little known Tuscan paradise
Travel itineraries, hiking, kayaking and sailing in Italy and in the world

In Tuscany, the stretch of coast around Golfo Baratti is truly beautiful: in particular, the promontory of Populonia, between Baratti and Piombino, is a pearl for sea kayak lovers and stand up paddle.
S 'Start little south of San Vincenzo, in the area of the beaches of the Princess and the New Tower, with the aim of arriving at the most beautiful and ancient part of Piombino.
For this purpose we left the double canoe from the princess, then took me The car in Piombino and returned from the kayak along 13 km with the folding bike, which we would then recover at the end of the day.

The alternative is to use public transport ... and walk a little.
The long beach south of San Vincenzo is flat but full of surprise, especially from the new tower from which we left.

Curious as children, we forwarded along the canal with the kayak (even with the sup is possible, being careful not to take tested on the stone arches), which was surrounded by one thick vegetation and beautiful lilies.

Left finally this area after our exciting explorations, we continued in the paddled towards Golfo Baratti. The small promontory that separates the New Tower area from the Gulf has cliffs, clear water and beautiful views.

near the poppy field there were also ancient ruins, I think Etruscan, partly excavated and then left in abandonment. We then continued our kayak ride, passing under wild cliffs.

We left the Gulf Baratti behind and continued south, towards our goal, Piombino. We were two hours late than the program, because in Baratti we had decided to eat two spaghetti with the rock, but not for this reason we renounced exploring every stretch of coast.

All the promontory between Golfo Baratti and Piombino is a succession of cliffs and small bays. The landscape is really imposing, ideal for being admired by a canoe.

A little paradise to move in kayaks in peace and beauty
From a wild cliff to the other, we arrived at some point a of the rocks on which there were some people, arrived from a path. It was the area of the fairy hole, characterized by extraordinarily blue water. With the stand up paddle you can admire crystal clear water in all its splendor.

It cannot be said that Piombino is beautiful: it would have the advantage of arising on beautiful cliffs, but in large part, condominiums of doubt taste were built. The oldest parts, however, are particularly fascinating.

Shortly after the Tower of Piazza Bovio, another cliff is met with a beach of bowls below and, at the top, a small cemetery. It is the place where I had parked the car and photographed the folding bicycle, a great point to land with the kayak or with the sup. We then arrived at the end of a spectacular tour, rich in surprises in the first part and of a pristine nature in the second.
