The Tuscan coast in canoe

Beaches, castles and cliffs from Livorno to Castiglioncello
Travel itineraries, hiking, kayaking and sailing in Italy and in the world

Among the ports of Livorno and Rosignano Solvay, there are 15-20 km of coastline rich in wild cliffs, beaches and many other points of interest: an ideal route for a day canoe trip. The railway stations along the coast allow you to re-enter the car with a convenient train, so you can even pay in one direction. In short, this excursion in kayak (or stand up paddle) is amazing, not too tiring and ... absolutely to do!

South of Livorno, the Antignano area has cliffs and clear sea

The first village in the south of Livorno is Antignano, where houses overlook sea and servants including water is often very limpid. This is a specific feature of this stretch of coast, which becomes truly spectacular when there are real castles on the rocks.

Arriving in the Nature Reserve of Calafuria, the landscape becomes more savage, and to the raveres will replace real cliffs. The water is always very clear and with the SUP seems to fly over the bottom. Under a modern bridge, a beautiful beach opens in front of an old bridge.

The most spectacular thing is the natural pools at the foot of the cliffs. In these swimming pools it will be underway underwater also of the footed rock strokes that seem almost artificial ... and in fact I am! Here in Calafuria there were no ancient Etruscan quarries, and even today some walls and stairs on which you can float in stand up paddle and kayaking are still under water.

After Calafuria the coast is lowered again, alternating small bowls and low cliffs with the occasional complex of villas. We go to the kayak towards the Peninsula of the Sonnino Castle.

This rocky promontory is really fascinating, with a wild nature until you reach the clear waters of the bathrooms of the Rogiolo.

At this point it is paid alongside bowls and low cliffs covered with greenery up to the houses of the small town of Quercianella, which is also a good place to stay if you want to spend more days in the area or to break the trip (especially if maybe you have a stand up paddle inflatable not too fast) ( Click here to compare the hotels and find the most convenient accommodation. ).

Shortly thereafter, there is the other tiny town of hair with its marina that is only populated in summer. Here and there are villages overlooking the sea. Water is often very limpid in this stretch without large cities.

The landscape begins to get more savage, even if there is no shortage of beautiful sea villas while approaching Castiglioncello.

The most incredible "houses" that meet are those excavated in the clay that appears suddenly shortly before arriving in Castiglioncello. We immediately arrive under by canoe or with the sup. After a couple of beautiful luxurious villas, in fact, the cliff turns itself, taking a clayy color.

Here someone has excavated rooms, holes and the tunnels forming the rustic sea view houses; There is the vague risk that collapses all at one moment to another, so it is not appropriate to approach, but the area is truly spectacular.

From here you can quickly reach the town of Castiglioncello, where luxurious villas rise around a promontory with crunches and inviting water for a dip.

After Castiglioncello begins a more flat and less beautiful area, that of the industrial establishments of Rosignano Solvay and the white beaches of Vada (beautiful but little natural, since the white is given by the Solvay bicarbonate scraps).
For this reason, The trip to the beautiful marina of Castiglioncello can be concluded. The station is very close (and reachable by passing in a beautiful park, among other things), so it is also convenient for those by the canoe or the sup inflatable.

Here this fantastic excursion concludes. PS: from Livorno the ferries also leave for The beautiful Capraia .
