The Maremma Park

Trails, pine forests on the sea and other wonders
Travel itineraries, hiking, kayaking and sailing in Italy and in the world

The Maremma Natural Park, which extends between Alberese and Talamone, near Grosseto, has uncontaminatie landscapes one of the most beautiful coast of Tuscany. We have already talked about the paths and beaches Around in Cala Violina (which is always in the Maremma Grossetana), but for trekking, unique panoramas and pine forests bounded the Maremma Park in the Alberese area is Even better.

Spiaggia nel Parco della Maremma
The long beach of Alberese in the Maremma park
The tourist and informative center is located in Alberese. In summer the paths and beaches are accessible only with the guide, while in the other seasons you can go alone, but equipped with a ticket (or subscription). At the beginning of the paths there is no bar nor a ticket machine, so the information center is the right place where you get it (unless you do the Portuguese, but I don't know what any punishment is!).
Pineta nel Parco della Maremma
Panorama on the pine forest along the path
Two starting points of the itineraries are Talamone and Alberese. Let's start from the latter: following a road towards Marina di Alberese, you meet bars (those who have park tickets for free by inserting a token at the leftmost bar, otherwise parking is then paid at the exit). For walkers parking is that of Casa Pinottolai. Here there is usually a nice fox looking for food and from here a path that enters the spectacular pine forest.

you walk for about a kilometer and a half to the turtle bridge, you cross it and you can admire large caves in the rocky wall.

The hiking itineraries are well indicated by the signs and the information center there is also a paper map (furthermore the Maps.me app is always useful). After the caves the path rises to the Mediterranean scrub, giving beautiful views, which become sensational at the Torre Castel Marino.

Torre Castel Marino
From here the classic itinerary plans to go to the beach in the Collelungo area and here it is advisable to walk on the long expanse of sand and admire the sand dunes covered with shrubs and the Maremma sea.
Mare e torre di Collelungo, Parco della Maremma
The sea and the beach of Alberese and the Tower of Collelungo
Also go up to the Tower of Collelungo is a great idea because of its spectacular views and for the grandeur of the tower itself. The Mediterranean scrub is rich in rosemary, myrtle, juniper, strawberry and many other shrubs that I cannot recognize (and that they do not produce anything edible, I imagine).

Panorama from the Tower of Collelungo to the Tower Castel Marino
From the beach of Collelungo you can go back to the Pinottolai House Parking Plan for about forty-five minutes, but it's worth walking even along the other trails, for those who have time. An itinerary leads to other panoramic points and towards the ruins of the Abbey of San Rabano. This path connects to a path on the hills that reaches Alberese's information center.

Along the way you can come across the typical fauna of the park, depending on the fortune: Volpi, Daines, Nuts, Various Birds and, surely, so many Maremma cows, like these who grazed among olive trees. Maremma cows stand out for the big horns that give a tone of aggression to the usual meeky air of cows. They are "Badass" cows.

Another path (which was closed in autumn 2020) leads to the beautiful bay of Cala di Oven, enclosed by the peninsula with a tower at the top.

For those who want to admire more steep cliffs, it is recommended to start from Talamone. This small town is seen in summer with lovers of the sea and water sports, but out of season it is very quiet (and presents a nice castle!).
Castello di Talamone
The castle of Talamone
At the end of the paved road that rises next to the castle, the paths leading to panoramic points on the coast and, for the great walkers, towards the Alberese area of the Maremma Natural Park, a dozen of km away.
Sentiero a Talamone, Maremma
Panorama from the path on the coast north of Talamone
The path we recommend from Talamone leads to the Cannella beach, from which you have a beautiful view over the entire coast. To reach the cinnamon from Talamone you use about an hour and a half (just over 5 km with two hundred meters in altogether to climb and as many to go down).
La Cannella, Talamone, Maremma
The stony cinnamon beach
The itinerary is largely immersed in the woods but touches some beautiful panoramic points and in particular the point of the traffic lights, where there is low Mediterranean scrub, gives the most spectacular views.
Talamone, Maremma
The Gulf of Talamone and the interior of the Maremma
From here it is also possible to see the lagoon of Orbetello, the Argentario and the island of Giglio. In short, for spectacular excursions in greenery and absolute peace by the sea, the Maremma park is the right place! But, since the Maremma is wide and we have proposed other trips in the area, Read here of all destinations in Tuscany . In short, good trip and good hikes!
