Scilla and the Viola coast

A village of fishermen, beaches and cliffs near Reggio Calabria
Travel itineraries, hiking, kayaking and sailing in Italy and in the world

At the far south of the Italica peninsula, Scilla looks like one of the most fascinating sea villages of Calabria, ideal for a day trip. The viola coast has crystal clear water, beaches and cliffs at a peak, and is a paradise for a seaside holiday.

Scilla e la Costa Viola, Calabria
Chianalea houses and violet coast
Scilla is located a few kilometers from Reggio Calabria, a splendid city that deserves a separate trip. Arriving in Scilla, first you can admire the castle and the perched village, spectacular view even more exciting ADL fact that, beyond, the Strait of Messina, can be seen Sicily.

The San Giorgio di Scilla district
Going through the houses of the village of the San Giorgio district you arrive at the wide beach, bathed by a very clear sea. The only thing I didn't like to scilla and the viola coast were the jellyfish, but I imagine having caught a couple of days unlucky. Looking towards the wide we also saw a fin - you know that Scilla and Cariddi is a dangerous place!

Looking at the sea, to the left of the Rocca there is precisely the beach, while on the right is the most picturesque borghetto of Chianalea fishing, made of stone houses on the sea.

A Chianalea you can eat excellent sandwiches with swordfish, typical area of the area (let us put there also two tropea onions, in the sandwich!).

Near Scilla, the village of Bagnara is less spectacular, but has a very long beach, at the end of which the cliffs of the wilder part of the Viola coast begin, made of truly impressive views. In addition, you will tell you that in Bagnara you eat very well.
Bagnara, Calabria
Bagnara

I walked the violet coast with an inflatable stand-up-paddle, which is always a great idea. You can pay for about 6 km between Marinella di Palmi and Bagnara and then go back, or, moving by train, you can take the section from Palmi to Bagnara in a single direction, from one station to another (8 km), to then deflate the kayak or sup and trace up a regional.

The grandeur of the purple coast
The Strait of Messina is one of the places with the strongest currents in Italy, with speeds that exceed 4 knots. In Bagnara they feel less, but the first day was quite strong, while nothing was nothing the next day, it depends very days and times. Now keep in mind and be careful, because going against a current of 4 knots is obviously impossible, if you really are kayak or sup samples ... at the maximum still stay!

We are precisely parties from Marinella di Palmi, which is an incredible place, both for the road that descends (full of landslides and that I feel for adviser in case of rains) both for the ripened houses that form this rustic village on the beach.

The cliffs of this part of Calabria are as imposing as those of Cape Vatican and the sea is almost just as a crystalline. However, the white sand is missing, because the beaches are made of quite big bowls.

On the other hand, this area, unlike Tropea and Capo Vaticano, is practically deserted, with coves set in imposing landscapes only for you.

Some gems of the violet coast are a wide and deep marine cave at the bottom to which bats live, a natural pool and a small church on the rocks. In short, this stretch of little tourist coast is all to visit, especially with kayak or stand up paddle.
Scilla is my favorite village of Calabria, but you can read Here other recommended trips In Calabria and various travel information on the region. Good vacation!
