Cape Ferrato and Monte Ferru

Trails and beaches of a magnificent corner of Sardinia
Travel itineraries, hiking, kayaking and sailing in Italy and in the world

Capo Ferrato is the beautiful promontory north of Costa Rei and, along with Monte Ferru who overlooks it, gives hikers one of the most memorable trekking in the south-eastern part of Sardinia, a not too known area, but really beautiful. In particular, the itinerary described here allows you to admire wonderful views to then enjoy enchanting wild beaches.

The Lighthouse of Capo Ferrato
The paths in question are 401 and 402, which together create a ring circuit: the first itinerary runs through Capo Ferrato and some beautiful beaches, allowing you to reach a suggestive lighthouse. The 402 part where the 401 (and vice versa) ends on the panoramic Mount Ferru, until it reaches 300 meters.

Being a ring path, you can leave at different points. The indications are numerous, although not always very clear, but at least the view of the signs reassures the fact that you are on the right way! On the left, while Monte Ferru stands out on the right.

As soon as the dirt road starts going up you can search for parking: a good point to start the walk is a slarg, at a curve, where the signs to the sea indicate (in addition to the hiking itinerary 401) also the wild beaches of Portu de S'Illixi and Cala Sa Figu. Alternatively, guided until you find, on your right, a bar at the shoulders stands the Agognato Monte Ferru.

On foot you go beyond the bar and walking on a wide trail (this long strip without vegetation also serves to cut fire in the event of fires) and you will soon arrive at the crossroads above in the picture: the signs indicate to turn left for the Monte Ferru. Do it, it's really a great idea. It goes up among the vegetation, with beautiful views of the hills, on the sea and the feraaxi pond. Proceeding by pace quickly, in 20 minutes you arrive at the Tower that stands at the top of Monte Ferru, from where you can admire a fantastic panorama.

Once you have fully enjoyed the view, you come back from where you came from and, returned to the junction of before, follow this time the indication for the naturalistic path that passes behind Mount Ferru. You walk in a verdant natural landscape up to a ridge (even here with a large trees strip). In addition to the greenery of vegetation, you need to appreciate the beauty of the red rocks. Mount Ferru was a volcano, which explains why it is particularly cool.

From the ridge you can always admire the Feraxi pond to the north, but also the Costa Rei to the south. And, in fact, here you take a clear and wide path that descends south, precisely towards the sea of the Costa Rei. It is practically a dirt road in very bad condition (not even an old panda 4x4 would be able to follow it) immersed in nature. On the other hand, on the road, you can continue cheerfully to the sea, to which you arrive after an hour-an hour and a half walk from the summit of Monte Ferru.

When you reach the sea you can dive satisfied to have concluded the path 402, or take the 401 route immediately and start coming back to departure. The path of Capo Ferrato begins with a dirt road that runs along the sea proceeding north/northeast. Here are some beautiful beaches surrounded by rocks, trees and bushes.

The dirt road then becomes a comfortable path that leaves the sea and rises slightly on the promontory in the midst of a low and very green vegetation. The landscape is charming and the sea views are always pleasant.

In a few minutes you arrive at the detour with indicated the Lighthouse of Capo Ferrato. Take this path absolutely, because it will take you to admire the extreme cliffs of the promontory.

The lighthouse is surrounded by cacti that make it even more photogenic and fascinating.

You then arrive to see the sea of the beaches of Portu de S'illlixi and Cala Sa Figu, to which you can go down to a corroborant bath. According to me this trekking is fantastic all year round, but the ideal periods are spring and autumn, when the beaches are almost deserted, the climate is not too hot and dive is still a huge pleasure, given that it has been accrating from Walk

Once properly appreciated the beauty of this not too well-known corner of Sardinia, returning to the car parked on the dirt road is a moment! Especially if you have previously stored your position (otherwise the risk is to go too far downstream or too upstream).

In all, the path 401 takes about an hour and a half, while 2 hours is the journey scheduled for the path 402 for Mount Ferru. But take a lot more time: between the deviations to the beaches and the lighthouse and walks on the cliffs (and counting the time for photos, diving in the beautiful Sardinian sea and deserved moments of relaxation) This trek deserves at least 5-6 hours, if not one Full day ... a day that will reveal really rich and exciting!
