Among the many panoramic trails near Portofino, the one for Cala degli Inglesi is unique because it allows you to get to the sea in the middle of the imposing cliffs of the promontory. On this page we also present the short deviation by tip of the Jesso, a panoramic rock in half between Portofino and Cala degli British.
Both paths, although spectacular and not too long, are poorly frequented because quite difficult. In particular, the Trekking for the British Cala is indicated as "very challenging" for the different slippery and steep traits on which you can help with chains. Nothing impossible, but it's good to inquire and then evaluate what to do with prudence.
The departure of the Path for Cala degli Inglesi is high, between Portofino and San Fruttuoso. There are several ways to reach it, the shortest from Portofino (where you can get to public transport) or starting on foot directly from Santa Margherita Ligure. In the latter case, you can start following the beautiful walk along the sea between Santa Margherita and goes.
Just before the famous Cervara, you can decide to go back along a path in the woods.
Alternatively, you can go up again, from Paraggi, along the wild path of the mills (with some remains of old stone buildings) or along the Niasca Torrent valley. Finally, you can simply start from Portofino along one of the trails for San Fruttuoso ... it is amazing how alternative trekking routes there are in the Portofino park.
The important thing, to get to the departure of the Path to Cala degli Inglesi, is to reach the La Cappelletta - Olmi area. Here, from path 113C, part, indicated by a wooden sign, the 110C path for Cala degli British. The first part is quite simple and it only becomes a little dizzy when you get over the sea.
When you start to go down, the situation is a bit more slippery and the first chains begin, from solid air. With due calm and attention, no dangers should be taken. Panoramas continue to be splendid.
The journey time of the trails always depends on the abilities of people, especially on a path like this. From Portofino, a couple of hours should be enough to get to Cala degli Inglesi. The latest part of the ITINEARIO takes place in the midst of the trees and then on huge boulders walking on which, always with the help of the chains, you can go down to the sea.
The climb takes place for the same itinerary and is certainly simpler, and perhaps even faster, of the descent.
Go back to the Cappelletta, you can lengthen the excursion with a detour to Punta del Gassa. This path, identified as 114C, does not require more than an hour between descent to the sea and ascent, with a relaxing admiration of the beautiful panorama. Obviously, it is always about adding about 200 meters of height difference to the already affected walk.
The Punta del Gassa route is simpler and easier than that for the English falls, but it does not allow you to dive, unless drambling dangerously on viginous rocks. In fact, this excursion ends on a beautiful group of big rocks.
The return can take place on one of the different paths already mentioned. If from the tip of the jass you want to come back, walking, towards Paraggi and Santa Margherita, the fastest solution is probably heading towards San Sebastiano and from here to Niasca ... a smart move also because before arriving in San Sebastiano you can admire this Panorama on Portofino.
Depending on the itinerary item among those proposed, and depending on the speed of the hiker (but obviously excluding the hypothesis of running!), From La Cappelletta to Santa Margherita an hour and a half-two can be needed. Buses and ferries to/from Portofino can save a lot of effort. The following map gives an idea of the paths, click to access the album with maps and photos.
to conclude ... good trip !! With prudence, and if you are trained to walk, this trail from Portofino to Cala degli Inglesi (and Punta del Gassa) is an experience to live with enthusiasm, especially in spring and autumn.
