From Campiglia to Scraia and Cantun

A path overlooking the Cinque Terre
Travel itineraries, hiking, kayaking and sailing in Italy and in the world

Between the Cinque Terre and Portovenere, there are few paths that allow you to reach the sea outside the well-known fishing villages. And while the Monesteroli is quite famous, the wonderful rights from Campiglia towards Sciara and towards the Persian beach ( Described here, with also deviation to the red ones ), in the area of Tramonti, are very little beaten. We describe here the trek by Campiglia to Scatteria, with a lot of adventurous deviation to the deserted beach of the cantons, or of the cantuns - an almost Mexican name for a wild stretch of coast between Riomaggiore and Portovenere.

Panorama da Campiglia
Campiglia houses and fields, and the view of the sea
Campiglia is a picturesque village perched at 400 meters of altitude, with panoramic sea view, and about half between the last of the Cinque Terre and Portovenere. Several paths pass from here. The best known itinerary is precisely the Alta Via delle Cinque Terre (AV5T) with the section from Riomaggiore in Portovenere, explained to this link , with a description of a description of the monesteroli staircase. Instead, the trail 535 combined with 504 (or col 504c) leads from Campiglia to Schiaretta and screams.

The houses of Sciara, who digging towards the Ligurian Sea
From the church of Campiglia, he goes to the west to take, between the houses, the path 535, slightly downhill. It is carried out in traits of forest alternating with some terraces (to note the many dry stone walls); In the middle of the woods, a detour goes off quite steep. You can follow it until you reach the beautiful houses of Sciara and then walk through the vineyards of Chiaggle. The picturesque houses alternate with the fields. You will meet a few people, and some cats.

Proceeding on comfortable stone stairs and stairways - comfortable to walk, but certainly not to work the fields in these hard and wonderful places - you are more and more overlooking the sea. Panoramas show the east coast of Liguria to the island of Tino.
Scalinata a picco sul mare di Schiara
Staircase overlooking the sea of Sciara
The last stretch, more and more steep, allows you to get to the sea, where a group of houses stands, once used by fishermen and today mostly fraught (but those intact are still used by some lucky holiday ... The sea, here, is often very limpid.

The little houses on the sea of Sciara
Arriving at the sea, you can't like going up! To do this, you must necessarily use the same path - or, better, the same staircase - up to the church of Sciara. Here you can take the path to the beach of the cantons. The Cantun path passes alongside the chapel (sea side) and continues on the coast, with some strict passages.

Spiaggia di Cantun, vicino a Schiara, Cinque Terre
The Cantun beach seen from the trail
After walking on some strict stone steps, with a little chilling steps, the last trait of descent is the most precise and requires some attention.

The last difficult passage for the Cantun beach
In front of the beach you see the big feral rock from the sea, with the cross on the top. The return takes place for the same path up to the church of Sciara, from where you can go back to Campiglia for the outbound itinerary, or continue on the coast to the east.

This path in the woods, which occasionally passes next to old dry walls, as well as offering splendid views, is in certain half fragato stretches. Thus, however, you can join the staircase that from Campiglia drops to the perch.
Scalinata tra Persico e Campiglia
The upper part of the staircase between the beach of the Persico and Campiglia
From here you can therefore go down to the Persian beach, but it is obviously another long staircase to the sea to which they will then have to follow the inevitable climb towards the 400 meters of share of Campiglia. It's probably better to postpone to another trip! In all, the completed route (Campiglia - Sea of Sciara - Church of Sciara - Cantun beach - Campiglia) can take about 4 hours of walking, to which you need to add at least another hour if you also go down to the beach of the perch.
This itinerary is one of the many trails between Genoa and Tuscany, all paths and all described to this Page on trekking in Liguria . Good trip !!
