Grenadines

The Caribbean Archipelago par excellence: white sand, palm trees and crystal clear sea
Travel itineraries, hiking, kayaking and sailing in Italy and in the world

Travel itinerary
The Grenadines are part of the islands Oven (Windward Islands), the Caribbean islands perhaps more wild and spectacular. This archipelago of quiet, green islets surrounded by coral reefs and wonderful sea, is a paradise for sailors.
Whoever does not sail can still visit him with public boats and organized tours. Tourist, the main islands of the Grenadines (belonging to the state of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines) are Bequia, Canoouan, Mustique, Mayreau, Union Island and the Tobago Cays (to which we dedicate a separate page). Some islands and islets instead part of the state of Grenada (from Carriacou to the south) and have not been dealt with in this travel itinerary.

Isola di Bequia, Grenadine, Caraibi
Admiralty Bay, Bequia
Bequia
This island is the entry point to the Grenadines for those arriving from the north. Numerous boats get moored at Admiralty Bay, the wide gulf on the upwind coast of the island. The beaches of Bequia are beautiful, even if they are not the caribbean postcard ones that can be admired at Tobago Cays. Behind the beaches the green hills sprinkled with colorful houses are spectacular. For Boquia navigators it is convenient not only to make customs, but also to make purchases at prices not particularly good in the characteristic shops and stalls that give on Admiralty Bay.

When I was in Bequia, in the mood to do smart things, I walked to the top of the highest hill to admire some spectacular glimpse of the island and the Caribbean Sea. For this itinerary it is just a half-hour use, being the "peak" less than 250 meters high, and it's a nice walk. On top, however, there are two pylons with repeaters. To take some spectacular photos of the island, I then climbed up one of the antennas. What is not done for Wild Trips' public!
Isola di Mayreau, Grenadine
The beach of Saline Bay in Mayreau

Mayreau, Union Island and Tobago Cays
Le Tobago Cays are a fantastic marine park and are described in detail here . Mayreau and Union are the two most close-inhabited islands. It is located next to so much beauty (and splendid also), one might think that Mayreau and Union have become two modern and very busy tourist centers. In fact, they have stored in everything and throughout the Caribbean look and have not been ruined by tourism, also because the number of visitors on this travel itinerary is still very low compared to what could be expected.
Mayreau is Surrounded with white sand beaches: on the upwind coast, the splendid Salt Whistle Bay and the wider Bay saline (great landings for the sailors) open, but also the coast above is a long and close strip of white sand, repaired by the coral reef And on which the rich tropical vegetation is stretched.

Paese di Mayreau, Grenadine
The village of Mayreau
Narrow streets and beautiful paths travel the small island of Mayreau and its green hills. On one of these, next to Saline Bay, there is the small town of Mayreau, made of typical colored houses. On some there are improvised wooden signs with "bar" written. Some vegetable garden and some goats complete the bucolic vision of this relaxation place. At the top, a small church dominates the panorama that goes from Saline Bay to Tobago Cays. If you make the spitable you can pure the bell.
Union Island is larger and more populous, but not least characteristic. Even the small airport track on the sea is Caribbean, with sailboats moored with two arms from the airport and the coral reef with its blue and blue reflections a little further. In the lagoon sheltered from the coral reef sweeps kites-surfing.

The other islands
Canoouan is a rather large island, but partly closed to the public because reserved for the rich that go to the resort with a golf course. You can exclude it from your travel itinerary, to respond with snobbish to snobbish.

Also in Mustique so many lands are private because this island of the Grenadines has become over the years an agglomeration of villas for the holidays of the American rich. However, the villas are well hidden from vegetation and the island has remained wild: some beaches and some paths are accessible and allow you to admire this small Caribbean island.
There are other smaller islands, such as Palm Island and Petit St Vincent , which deserve a detour for those who are sailing sailing.
