Walking from Chiavari to Sestri

The paths of Lavagna and Santa Giulia
Travel itineraries, hiking, kayaking and sailing in Italy and in the world

Chiavari, blackboard and sestri Levante are three very interesting towns that overlook the Gulf of Tigullio. In addition to historic centers and walks at sea, Chiavari and Sestri present some beautiful paths, especially the rich itineraries that from Chiavari lead to Zoagli e and the shorter but spectacular from Sestri a punta manara . Trekking from Chiavari to Sestri along the paths of Lavagna and Santa Giulia is more rare, but some panoramas absolutely deserve a view.

Passeggiata a mare di Chiavari
Chiavari sea walk
In Chiavari you can take a ride on the seafront and in the historic center (between the Caruggio and Piazza della Fenice), before heading towards Lavagna. Here there is no path to follow, because Chiavari and blackboard are contiguous, separated only by the Entella river. Walking for city centers, once crossed the small but picturesque historic borard of Lavagna, you arrive at the start of the path for Sestri Levante.
Spiaggia di Lavagna
Lavagna beach
The departure coincides, in particular, with the beginning of the "overview", the Lavagnese circular (on the browser, look for the intersection between Via Tedisio and the tiny via Monte, so do not miss :)). Here you will find the directions for Santa Giulia. Thus start climbing between Creze (the typical Ligurian lamps that run between fields and dry walls) and olive groves.

Path, or rather Creuza, between Lavagna and Santa Giulia

The indications are always clear. We pass the hamlet of San Benedetto and continue to rise, along a picturesque trait path, up to the church of Santa Giulia, at 250 meters of altitude, which is a real panoramic balcony on the Gulf of Tigullio. For the best view, you can get from the alleys behind the church to this meadow.

The wide panorama obviously also shows the rest of the Gulf of Tigullio and Sestri Levante.

To reach Sestri da Santa Giulia it could also rise towards the hills, aimed at the woods to Mount Capenardo, from which to go down towards the sea, as described Here in this regard of the slate path . The itinerary here suggested is shorter (a total of two hours from blackboard to sestri) and perhaps more characteristic, because it passes through the olive groves, with continuous views of the sea and sestri levante.

Sentiero a Cavi di Lavagna
Path from Santa Giulia to Lavagna Cables, with Sestri Levante in the background
From Piazzale of the Church of Santa Giulia, therefore, the stairs descend, cross the road and take the path (signposted) that proceeds east parallel to the road. Continue between villas, dry stone walls and olive groves, coming from the ruins of the church of Santa Cecilia, who few know.
Chiesa di Santa Cecilia a Cavi di Lavagna
The ruins of the church of Santa Cecilia to chalkboard cables
At one point, a staircase leads to blackboard cables. Continuing eastwards, you cross the historic village and you are in front of the Hill of Sant'Anna. A well-marked path from here leads to Sestri Levante, and if in the very first part it is nothing that, then it becomes the most beautiful stretch of the entire hiking itinerary from Lavagna to Sestri.

First the views go on blackboard and overlooking the sea below the cliffs of Sant'Anna. Immediately after you get to admire the Sestri Levante peninsula.

Depending on the seasons, from here you can admire the storms, eat the strawberries (delicious ripe red fruits in the late autumn) or contemplate colorful flowers.
Sestri Levante vista da Sant'Anna
Floral panorama from Sant'Anna to Sestri Levante
After a few hundred meters, this beautiful walk at the top of Sant'Anna's cliff arrives at the picturesque ruins of the Sant'Anna chapel, in a panoramic position overlooking the sea. This historic church is really spectacular.
Cappella di Sant'Anna
The chapel of Sant'Anna, very close to Sestri Levante
From here the panoramic path for the Monte Capenardo described here . Instead, in our case, we are content to arrive at the beginning of Sestri Levante, which requires a few minutes. It goes down along the path, you get to a road along the stream and here, if you want, you take ladders leading to a underpass and Sant'Anna beach. Another 10 minute walk along the sea promenade and is located on the Sestri Levante peninsula, where there is the beautiful historic center, while for those who want to return to Chiavari the station is very close.

This itinerary is one of the many trails between Genoa and Tuscany, all paths and all described to this Page on trekking in Liguria . To travel the entire Riviera from west to the east, the previous stage is the one between Chiavari and Leivi and then switch to that between Zoagli and Chiavari , while the next route leads to Sestri Levante and Punta Manara . Good trips !!
