From Riomaggiore to Portovenere ...

... passing through Monesterols! A day of trekking on the sea of the Cinque Terre
Travel itineraries, hiking, kayaking and sailing in Italy and in the world

Choose the most beautiful path in the world is practically impossible. If you talk about hiking itineraries that can be carried out on a day, however, the walking from Riomaggiore to Portovenere passing through Monesterols has really everything to be at the top of the list.

Riomaggiore e la costa delle Cinque Terre, Liguria
Riomaggiore and the Cinque Terre coast
The departure from the Cinque Terre, the views of the Ligurian coast, the vineyards and maritime pines, perhaps a dip in the sea ... read, look at the photos, even better try the path, and then decide if it can't really be this the promenade more Beautiful planet!
Sentiero sopra Riomaggiore, Liguria
Along the path over Riomaggiore
The path can be traveled throughout the year, but in the hottest summer days it is exaggeratedly tiring. The Riomaggiore - Portovenere route is quite beaten, even if not like the Cinque Terre, but the diversion to Monesterols we offer allows you to discover very little frequented and even more spectacular places, as well as the most fascinating sea staircase in the world (eh eh I insist ... :)).
Sentiero Riomaggiore Monesteroli Portovenere coi cani
The path between Riomaggiore and Portovenere passing from Monesteroli also like dogs
This is a day trek, but a nice full day, because among the various salts and get down the overall height difference is about 1000 meters. Then take at least 8 hours, including various breaks for lunch, snacks, photos, relaxation and perhaps a dip in the limpid waters of monesteroli.
Tra Riomaggiore e Portovenere, Liguria
View on the stretch of coast between Riomaggiore and Portovenere
The walk starts from Riomaggiore, the most eastern of the Cinque Terre. From here there are numerous paths, we care about the 593V that goes up to the Madonna di Montenero.
Clearing rapidly along trails and "Creuze" (the typical Ligurian lanes that rise between the cultivated terraces), you arrive at the sanctuary (342 meters above sea level) after about an hour.
Madonna di Montenero sopra Riomaggiore, Liguria
The Madonna of Montenero, the panoramic sanctuary over Riomaggiore
The building is located in an extraordinarily panoramic point and the view ranges from the Cinque Terre to Palmaria and Tino, the islands in front of Portovenere. Here you can start having the suspicion that it really is the most beautiful path in the world, but in short, there are other places like this. The trekking, however, is still long ...
Panorama dalla Madonna di Montenero sopra Riomaggiore, Liguria
Panorama eastern by the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Montenero
From the Sanctuary of Montenero the climb continues much less steep, crosses some traits of forest and then proposes spectacular views on the Ligurian coast. In this area also part of the Pattern trail on the sea of Punta Pineda . The next goal is the hill of the telegraph, at 513 meters of altitude: from here, no longer go up.
A very convenient trail (with lots of bars-like tools and rings to make even more gymnica) goes from the telegraph to Sant'Antonio (Av5t, Alta Via delle 5 Terre). Arrived at the Valico di Sant'Antonio, the itinerary for Portovenere continues at altitude, but we propose to go down to Casotti and Fossola, from where we will walk towards Monesterol. Thus abandon the av5t path and take 534.
Sentiero verso Monesteroli, Liguria
Going down from Sant'Antonio to Monesteroli, along a Creza you cross the village of Casotti
The descent takes place first in the woods, until the sea view is opened, and what a sight! The trail crosses terraces cultivated with vineyards. The leaves, autumn, take a wonderful yellow color that stands against the blue of the sea.
Fossola, sentiero verso Monesteroli, Liguria
The proposed path passes through the town of Fossola, more panoramic than the traditional Riomaggiore route - Portovenere

The vineyards and monesteroli in the background
Shortly after having passed Casotti, turn left and cross the scattered houses of Fossola ... he stops going down and continues to the coast along the path 535 to the staircase that, enough to precipice, drops to Monesteroli (path 536) . It is a difference in height of about 300 meters all in irregular steps. The views, however, repay fatigue.
Il ripido sentiero verso Monesteroli, Liguria
The steep trail to Monsteroli is a beautiful and tiring staircase
We cross characteristic buildings and terraces partly cultivated until you reach the sea, where the water is always clear (if there is no wave). If you are still not convinced that it is the most beautiful path in the world, dive and refresh your ideas!
Il mare di Monesteroli, Liguria
Monesteroli from above
Il mare di Monesteroli, Liguria
The sea of Monesteroli repays every effort spent along the path
The problem is that the monesteroli rises for the same 300 meters of steps will make you change your mind. You will direct you: "The most fascinating walk in the world cannot be so tiring." On the other hand, they will be of steel buttocks, and when you pull your breath and you will admire the view ... Well, again you will be convinced that the Riomaggiore hiking itinerary - Monesteroli - Portovenere can really be the most beautiful on the planet. A bit of schizophrenia, in short, but everything in place.

Once the papers of Monesterols are completed, you still go up along the path 535 you also encounter some other steps (but less steep) up to Campiglia, at an altitude of 401 meters. In this small town you can drink a panoramic coffee or a refreshing beer. From here, other splendid staircases come down to the sea: the Sentiero 535 + 504 towards Sciara and the beach of the cantuns described here , and the itinerary 528 towards the rocky beach of the perch. Obviously you can't exaggerate for the day, the proposed trekking is already long enough in itself and you can keep these paths for another trip to prevent the most beautiful walk to the world to be transformed into an unprecedented strap.
Sentiero Riomaggiore Portovenere, Liguria
Another beautiful panorama near Monesterols on the Riomaggiore Portovenere trail
From Campiglia the classic Riomaggiore itinerary is resumed - Portovenere along the High Via delle Cinque Terre. Treatment stretches in the woods where the path, high over the sea, has beautiful views of sunsets and palmaria cliffs. Furthermore, at some point there is on the crest that divides the Ligurian sea from the Gulf of La Spezia. From here, you can also admire the Apuan Alps and then the city of La Spezia.

Da Campiglia a Portovenere, le scogliere del Muzzerone, Liguria
Along the path you have views of the wonderful cliffs of the sunsets and the Muzzerone: this is the view that is walking between Campiglia and Portovenere
If you walk this walk in autumn or on a beautiful winter day, it's easy to arrive in Portovenere almost at sunset. However, the splendid Portovenere is the worthy conclusion of the most beautiful trekking in the world ... or in any case of a path that cannot be memorable.
